Action for Children
Action for Children works in local communities across the UK to make a real and lasting difference for disadvantaged children as they grow up.
We make children’s lives better: now, tomorrow and every day.
For more than 145 years, we’ve made growing up safer. We make things happen quickly and with understanding. We help children at different stages of their lives. We care about each child and every family. We treat everyone as an individual and give people the support they really need.
We never give up. Together, we take action for children.

We also campaign for changes that make life better for vulnerable children and young people. Adding your voice to our campaigns helps us make change happen faster.
With your help we can really turn up the volume and make our voices heard by the people with the power to change things. We have already had huge successes with our campaigning and our new campaign ‘Fair by Five’ needs your help! One in three children don’t reach a good level of development by age five. In the most deprived areas, this number is higher. We think this is unacceptable. If you want to help, sign up and be a campaigner.
How Action for Children helped Connor
Conor was struggling to juggle school and taking care of his mum.
In his own words, “My mum is bipolar so I spent most of my time in the house, looking after her.
I never really went out or socialised much - I wasn’t very happy, as you can imagine. To be honest, I thought everyone looked after someone like I looked after my mum – I assumed it was normal.
I wasn’t doing that well in school as I didn’t like leaving my mum so I missed a lot of classes to stay home and keep an eye on her.
When I was 15, my Pupil Support teacher, was the one that noticed I was struggling and got in contact with Action for Children.
She introduced me to a support worker at Action for Children and she explained that I was a young carer and asked if I would like to come to an Action for Children centre to meet other young carers and have a bit of a break”.
